The City of Longwood is looking for volunteers to be a part of our community . Most members of these boards are community citizens who are appointed by the City Commission and supported by City Staff. These individuals dedicate and volunteer their time and talents to support and promote the City. Each board has a stated purpose that fits into the framework of City government and provides a link between the citizens and the elected officials.
The City of Longwood has four (4) Boards and Committees:
Charter Advisory Committee: The City Commission shall, from time to time and not less than every three (3) years appoint a Charter Advisory Committee for the purpose of reviewing the Charter of the City and, if deemed appropriate to the interest of the residents of Longwood, recommendations shall be submitted to the Commission for proposed amendments or revisions to the Charter. The Advisory Committee shall consist of one (1) member representing each Commission District and continue in existence for a period not to exceed one (1) year. CURRENTLY SEEKING INTERESTED RESIDENTS.
Florida Municipal Pension Trust Fund Retirement Plan Trust for Firefighters and Police Officers (Pension Board): Reviews and administers the Police/Firefighter Pension Plan. Meets quarterly, third (3rd) Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Five member Board (three City residents, two members of Pension Plan.
Land Planning Agency: Reviews and recommends requests for rezoning, comprehensive plan amendments, conditional use, etc. Meets on second (2nd) Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. Five member Board; all city residents; three (3) year terms.
Parks and Recreation Advisory Board: Assists in the development of plans to meet the present and future parks and recreational needs of the City. Meets on the first (1st) Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Seven-member Board; all city residents; Three (3) year terms.
Requirements for Board/Committee Membership: Board and Committee members should have the expertise necessary to accomplish the Board’s/Committee’s objectives; a reputation for integrity and community service; interest or experience in the area of Board/Committee service desired. All Boards/Committees, unless otherwise noted, are composed of members who are City of Longwood residents. Boards/Committees require financial disclosure; and if appointed to one of these Boards/Committees, Section 112.3145, Florida Statutes, require that you file a Form 1, Limited Financial Disclosure, with the Supervisor of Elections in the county of your permanent residence within thirty (30) days of your appointment.
Terms of Office: Most Board/Committee members are appointed for either two or three year terms. Chair is elected for a one-year term. However, there is no limit on the number of terms a Board member may serve.
Attendance: Boards/Committees meet monthly with meeting times varying in length according to agenda items to be addressed. Regular attendance is required and each Board/Committee has rules and procedures that dictate the attendance requirements.
