Police Officer Recognition

PD LIfe Saving Award

From Police Chief David Dowda:

On June 13, 2022, at approximately 7 pm, members of the on‐duty uniformed patrol squad were alerted to an urgent call about a child in the middle of a retention pond near State Road 434 and Rangeline Rd. Lt. Adam Bryant, Sgt. Finch, and Ofc. Arciola arrived moments later and observed the child in the middle of the pond struggling to keep his head above the waterline. They all had the presence of mind to drop water-sensitive equipment before quickly entering the pond. Sgt. Finch and Lt. Bryant swam out to the child and both were able to pull him in close enough to the shoreline for Ofc. Arciola to take the child from them and pull him in the rest of the way to the shore. Once they had him back on land, they were able to calm him with help from Longwood Firefighters who assessed him for injuries. Fortunately, the child was uninjured during the incident. They learned the young man was diagnosed with autism disorder, is attracted to bodies of water, ran away from his parent, and purposely jumped into the water. Despite his struggle to remain above water he was refusing to leave the pond. I have no doubt had Lt. Bryant, Sgt. Finch and Ofc. Arciola not reacted quickly, this situation would have ended tragically. Their actions are in the best tradition of law enforcement, and I am honored to serve with them and proud to award them with a Life-Saving Award.
