Title VI & ADA Compliance / Transition Plan
Introduction
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) is a civil rights statute prohibiting discrimination against persons with disabilities in all aspects of life, including transportation, based on regulations promulgated by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ). DOJ’s regulations require accessible planning, design, and construction to integrate people with disabilities into mainstream society. Further, these laws require that public entities responsible for operating and maintaining the public rights of way do not discriminate in their programs and activities against persons with disabilities. FHWA’s ADA program implements the DOJ regulations through delegated authority to ensure that pedestrians with disabilities have the opportunity to use the transportation system’s pedestrian facilities in an accessible and safe manner.
The Act applies to all facilities, including both facilities built before and after 1990. State and local governments, public entities, or agencies are required to perform self-evaluations of their current facilities, relative to the accessibility requirements of the ADA.
It is the policy of the City of Longwood to ensure compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and all related statutes or regulations in all programs and activities. The City of Longwood does not tolerate discrimination in any of its programs, services, or activities. Thus, the City of Longwood will not exclude from participation in, deny the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination against anyone on the grounds of race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, religion, income, or family status.
The Plan
The City of Longwood ADA Transition Plan is designed to address all ADA-related deficiencies within the City of Longwood Rights-of-Way and is intended to achieve the following:
Identify physical obstacles that limit the accessibility of facilities to individuals with disabilities,
Describe the methods to be used to make the facilities accessible,
Provide a schedule for making the access modifications, and
Identify the public officials responsible for the implementation of the Transition Plan.
The focus of this plan is to ensure that the City's public infrastructure is accessible for all. This typically includes sidewalks, pedestrian paths, curb ramps, street crossings, driveway crossings, crosswalks, median crossings, public transit stops, and pedestrian-activated signal systems. The accessibility of pedestrian facilities in the public right-of-way is only one aspect for providing equal access to state government programs, services, and activities – but it is an aspect that affects many citizens in their daily activities.

Get Involved
Public Involvement is a vital component of the ADA Transition Plan and will ensure the plan responds to and meets the needs of our community. There are multiple avenues for community involvement, including public meetings, Disability Advisory Board Meetings, and the ability to send e-mail and written comments.
The City of Longwood has appointed Eric Nagowski as ADA Coordinator for Title I and Title II. Jammie Tackett has been appointed as the Title VI / Non-Discrimination Coordinator. Below is the contact information for both coordinators:
