Stormwater Management
Runoff Water Cycle

In Central Florida, many cities struggle with stormwater management and maintenance problems.  The City of Longwood seeks to prevent many common problems before they begin with a proactive approach to both the design and maintenance of the stormwater management system.

Click here to see a map of the City's entire stormwater management system.  Every pond, ditch, and inlet is located, examined, and maintained on a regular basis.

Strict standards are in place to require privately owned stormwater management systems to meet the same standards they were designed to meet.  To read the City's stormwater ordinance, click here.

Inlet Marking Project

The City of Longwood Public Works Department has begun placing new markers on drainage inlets throughout the City.  These markers are intended to remind everyone that the materials that enter the City's stormwater system through inlets end up in our local water bodies.  To help protect our lakes, please make sure to "let only rain down the drain."

How can I help improve stormwater quality?

Stormwater runoff from our streets, homes, and businesses goes through a system of retention and treatment structures and is released into the natural environment.  Check out this brochure to learn how you can help to keep dangerous pollutants out of our lakes and drinking water.

The City of Longwood has recently completed the installation of three new aerating fountains.  These fountains are located in Lake Horton, Lake Jane, and in the Highland Hills retention area.   In addition to their aesthetic appeal, these fountains also aid in aquatic plant control and are an important part of the City's Stormwater Management system.
