Voter/Election Functions

 

The City Clerk is the designated Supervisor of Elections for all City elections. Regular City elections are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of each year.  All elections for the office of Commissioner shall be conducted on a non-partisan basis without regard for or designation of political party affiliation.  Commissioners serve a term of three years.

 

Candidate Qualifying Procedures

 

(a) Voters:  Any qualified voter of the City may qualify for the City Commission as a Commissioner within the district they reside.

 

(b) Qualifying Fee:  A non-refundable qualifying fee equal to 5% of the annual compensation shall be required of each candidate. If such candidate is unable to pay the qualifying fee, then the candidate shall be required to qualify in accordance with Section 99.095 of the Florida Statutes.

 

Elections

 

(a) General Provisions:  Candidates for office of Commissioner under the City Charter shall run within the Commission District in which they reside and for which they shall qualify, and be elected at large for such office by receiving the highest number of votes cast.

 

(b) Tie Votes:  In the event of a tie vote at a regular City Election, the candidates receiving the tie votes shall be voted upon in an election designated as a "run-off election" to be held on the second Tuesday following the date of the regular City Election. The candidate receiving the highest number of votes in such "run-off election" shall be declared to have been elected to the office to be filled.  Single Candidate:  In the event not more than one person qualifies as a candidate for a designated seat on the Commission to be filled at an election, that candidate will be presumed to have voted for him/herself and will be automatically elected without his/her name being listed on the ballot.  Public Notice shall be given of the election of said candidate.
