Fire Chief

Fire Chief Laurie Mooney, Executive Fire Officer, Paramedic, has been working in the City of Longwood Fire Department since 1983. Chief Mooney climbed the Longwood Fire Department career ladder rising from firefighter, engineer, lieutenant, staff training officer, staff fire marshal and arson investigator, battalion chief, and finally fire chief after a competitive national search process.
Chief Mooney possesses a Bachelor of Science in Fire Administration and is pursuing a Master of Public Administration in Emergency Management from Jacksonville State University in Alabama. As part of her training, she also graduated from the National Fire Academy’s prestigious four-year Executive Fire Officer Fellowship.
Among her accomplishments, Chief Mooney has received the IAFC Foundation and an Yvorra Leadership Development Foundation Scholarship. She has also published articles in fire service magazines and instructed sessions at national and regional fire service conferences. Additionally, she is regularly appointed by FEMA as an Evaluator for the Grant Assistance to Firefighters program.
Recognitions
Fire Chief Laurie Mooney recently achieved the status of Member in the Institution of Fire Engineers, United States of America Branch. This organization represents leaders of the world’s fire service and engineering communities, and who “promote, encourage and improve the science and practice of fire engineering fire prevention and fire extinction.”
Engineer Paul Ross from the Longwood Fire Department was promoted to the position of Lieutenant. He will begin this new role effective Tuesday, July 3, 2007. Paul began his career with Longwood Fire Rescue in 1994 as a Firefighter, and has continued to progress through the ranks. He has gained the respect of many over the years and has proven himself capable of doing the job. Chief Mooney along with the rest of the City of Longwood would like to congratulate Lieutenant Paul Ross on this accomplishment and wish him the best in this new position.
Lieutenant Richard Usher from the Longwood Fire Department has been promoted to Battalion Chief for Shift B. As of April 1st, 2008, Lt. Usher will be taking over for Michael Clelland who retires after 25 years of service. The Longwood Fire Department, along with the rest of the City of Longwood's personnel, would like to thank Michael Clelland for all his years of service and congratulate Lt. Usher in his new position.
The Longwood Fire Department raised $2,800 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association during the 2007 Fill-the-Boot Campaign. Firefighters from the Longwood Fire Department used their boots to collect donations for the MDA at intersections.
