Commissioner Cortes took the oath of office on Friday, November 6, 2009.
Commissioner Cortes was born in Brooklyn, New York. When he was a child, his parents moved to their native Puerto Rico, where he was raised in Bayamon. He attended EDP College in Hato Rey from 1981 to 1985. Commissioner Cortes married his wife Virginia in 1984. They had three children, Robert Jr., Kylee and Randy. Robert Jr. passed away at a young age. Commissioner Cortes moved back to the United States in September 1985. In 1989, Commissioner Cortes moved to the Central Florida area from South Carolina.
Commissioner Cortes is the Founder and Co-Owner of Cortes Towing Service, which was established in 1989. He joined the Professional Wrecker Operators of Florida in 1990. Commissioner Cortes was elected to the Board and became the Region Director of this Organization in 2005. He moved his business to Longwood in 1996 from Altamonte Springs. In 1997, Commissioner Cortes moved into his current home in Longwood Plantation.
Commissioner Cortes has been involved in community issues through his role as co-owner of Cortes Towing Service. In addition to his service to the Professional Wrecker Operators of Florida, Commissioner Cortes also volunteers his time and equipment to the Seminole County Community Traffic Safety Team. Commissioner Cortes was the President og the Longwood Plantation Homeowners Association President, having become active in 2007. Commissioner Cortes is an active Member of St. Mary Magdalen Church. Commissioner Cortes is fluent in both English and Spanish.
