Fire Hydrant Testing - Water Discoloration |
|
The City is performing tests on all of the fire hydrants. Please be aware of the following:
During the flushing process, you may experience some water discoloration, especially when work is being done in your immediate neighborhood. You may also notice a slight odor of chlorine. Any discoloration only affects the appearance of the water; it does not affect the taste or water quality.
If you see a crew flushing a hydrant on your street, avoid running tap water and using the washing machine or the dishwasher until the flushing is done. If you see hydrant-flushing crews working in the area, please drive carefully and treat them like any other road construction crew.
- If tap water is used during flushing, it could come out full of sediment that causes discoloration. If you encounter discolored water, shut the water off and wait several minutes. After waiting, check the clarity by running cold water for a few minutes, allowing new water to work its way into your pipes. If the water is clear, it's OK to use. If not, wait a few more minutes and check again. In some cases, there may be slight discoloration for a few hours. This discoloration only affects the appearance of the water; it does not affect the taste or water quality.
- Avoid washing laundry during scheduled flushing times. Wait until the water runs clear at the tap, then wash a load of dark clothes first.
- If pressure or volume seems low, check your faucet screens for trapped particles.

Status of the Proposed Publix at Rangeline and SR 434 |
|
The City previously announced that Fifth Thirds Bank purchased the Pic ‘N Save property in May of 2007 with the stated intent of demolishing the old building and constructing a new Publix and Fifth Thirds Bank branch. Since that time, the City has worked with the Publix developer in a number of meetings to discuss site layout and design issues.
The Longwood City Commission unanimously embraces the proposed Publix coming to Longwood.
On January 7, 2008, the City Commission requested that Publix submit a site development plan and master plan showing the proposed Publix, Fifth Thirds Bank, and improvements to the Township Plaza.
At this time, Publix has provided the City with a conceptual site layout but has not yet submitted an engineered site development plan for review. Click here to see Publix’s conceptual plan. The Publix design team has indicated that they are currently working with adjacent property owners and the Saint John’s River Water Management District to address several issues.
First, in order to maximize the size of the building, Publix is seeking to obtain additional property behind the Pic ‘N Save.
Second, the current proposal calls for approximately 65,000 square feet of wetland encroachment which must be mitigated and approved by the Water Management District.
Third, the proposed building also encroaches into a flood zone, and the Water Management District is requiring that compensating storage be provided to ensure flooding does not occur in the Island Lake area.
Finally, Publix must meet all other stormwater management requirements imposed by the Water Management District.
The City of Longwood is ready to accept and review an application as soon as Publix has complied with requirements from the Water Management District and is ready to submit a plan for review. The City Commission has consistently expressed a desire to work closely with Publix to help this project become a reality in the very near future. |
